Fine Wine Friday, 28th February. An Austrian Wine Symphony
6.30pm at Market House’s 3rd Floor Meeting Room, 12 Market Hill, Cambridge CB2 3NJ
Fine Wine Fridays at Market House continue: we will explore some of Austria’s most refined and distinctive wines. This is an opportunity to taste wines of exceptional quality, sourced from several of the country’s most revered producers—wines that demonstrate precision, depth, and a profound sense of place. Most of these wines are not currently available in the UK.
The lineup. Ried means single vineyard:
- Wieninger, Wiener Gemischter Satz Ried Ulm 1ÖTW Nussberg 2021 – A quintessential expression of Vienna’s historic Gemischter Satz, this field blend from the prestigious Ulm Vineyard showcases seamless balance, vibrant minerality, and the energy of Austria’s only capital-city wine region.
- Jurtschitsch, Riesling Quelle 2020 – Crafted by one of Austria’s leading organic wineries, this Kamptal Riesling is a pure, tension-driven expression of cool-climate elegance, bursting with citrus, wet stone, and crystalline acidity.
- Grabenwerkstatt Brandstatt Grüner Veltliner, Wachau 2018 – Sourced from the impossibly steep terraces of the Wachau, this Grüner Veltliner is a masterclass in precision and longevity, its taut mineral core unfolding into layers of citrus zest, white pepper, and profound depth.
- Ernst Triebaumer, Grüner Veltliner 2016 – A rare example of Grüner Veltliner from Burgenland’s legendary Triebaumer family, this wine defies expectations with its textured mouthfeel, savoury spice, and remarkable ageing potential.
- Tement, Ried Zieregg Kår 2021 – The crown jewel of Styrian Sauvignon Blanc, Zieregg Kår is a deeply structured, flinty, and profound wine that rivals the best of the Loire while maintaining the unmistakable signature of limestone-rich southern Styria.
- Tement, Ried Grassnitzberg Reserve 2017 – Unlike the exuberant styles of New World Sauvignon Blanc, this single-vineyard Styrian bottling is layered, lees-aged, and complex, revealing a unique interplay of salinity, herbal nuance, and precise acidity.
- Bretz Jörg, Blaufränkisch Spitzerberg 2015 – Hailing from the limestone-dominated Spitzerberg, one of Austria’s finest terroirs for Blaufränkisch, this wine is a study in finesse and structure, with lifted red fruit, graphite minerality, and Burgundian poise.
- Kollwentz, Ried Point Blaufränkisch 2017 – From Burgenland’s historic Kollwentz estate, this single-vineyard Blaufränkisch represents the pinnacle of Austrian red winemaking, combining power, spice, and fine-grained tannins in a wine built for long-term cellaring.
- Kracher, Noble Reserve Trockenbeerenauslese N.V. – A legendary name in Austrian sweet wine, Kracher’s botrytised masterpiece delivers unparalleled intensity and purity, with layers of honeyed apricot, saffron, and exotic spice unfolding in a near-endless finish.
