Tue 22nd October. Climate & Wine: understanding the influence on grapes and wine

7pm at The Sidings at Station Tavern, 2 Station Sq, Cambridge CB1 2GA

Most wine growing regions are located between 30-50° latitude – because it’s warm enough to ripen grapes, but cool enough that the grapes can develop physiological (flavour) ripeness as well as sugar ripeness. Some grapes are adapted to thrive in warmer climates, the vines needing higher temperatures in order to fully ripen. Think of juicy, red-fruited Grenache (aka Garnacha) from the South of France or Spain, fruity Primitivo. Cooler climates lengthen the growing season for grapes, allowing them to develop complexity, while preserving crisp acidity – think Chablis, or German Rieslings and Spätburgunders. The flavours that grapes develop depend in part on the temperature of the region, with warmer regions developing more tropical or riper fruit character compared with cooler counterparts. It’s fun to taste these side by side to appreciate this effect of climate – and see which you prefer!

This tasting will feature a minimum of 6 wines, which will be available for order at a 10% discount at the end of the event.
