Thu 20th February. Washed Rind Cheeses & Wine Tasting

6.30pm at d’Arry’s Restaurant, Bar & Cheesemonger, 2-4 King St, Cambridge CB1 1LN

The second of the series will explore the rich and complex world of washed rind cheeses. These cheeses owe their distinctive character to regular brining, or washing in alcohol, which encourages the growth of Brevibacterium linens, the bacteria responsible for their characteristic orange-hued rinds, pungent aromas, and deeply savoury flavours. This practice, dating back to medieval monastic traditions in France and Belgium, was originally devised to sustain moisture and prevent unwanted moulds, but it also led to the development of cheeses with extraordinary depth and texture.

In this special tasting, we will explore five exceptional British interpretations of this classic style:

  • the Alpine-inspired Ogleshield, with its supple paste and rich, buttery depth
  • Ashcombe, a Morbier-style cheese layered with ash and exuding warm, meaty notes
  • Alpen Cheddar, a hybrid of traditional Cheddar and washed-rind intensity
  • the cider-washed Yarlington, showcasing the influence of Somerset’s orchards
  • Rachel, a rare washed-rind goat’s cheese with a gentle, nutty elegance.

Guided by Charlie Gerard, cheese expert at The Cheesemonger at d’Arry’s, and Cong, who will select at least 5 wines to complement their complex profiles, this evening will offer a deep dive into the science and art of pairing. If a particular cheese or wine captures your palate, you will have the opportunity to purchase some to take home. You are also most welcome to stay for dinner at d’Arry’s to continue the indulgence.

This tasting will feature a minimum of 5 wines. We recommend you don’t eat prior to the event in order to best appreciate the cheeses and wines. We ask you to refrain from wearing pungently scented products to the tasting, so as not to compromise your experience or that of the other guests.

Please note the location!
